ok guys. I have all my virus infections in my quarantine and have not gotten a virus in about 5 months. I have used disk cleanup, and have increased my virtual memory size to 768. i Have almost 6 gigs of memory left and I dont have many programs at all. I use firefox and i have deleted all the cookies and temporary internet files. i have emptied my recycable bin also. I have ran spyware checks too. I've tried everything and it is still pretty slow.

HAve you tried a defrag of your hard disk ? That seems to be the only thing you have missed out.

Virtual memory actually SLOWS your computer down. This is because it loads slower than actual RAM, so it increases the delay and makes your computer even slower.
What you can do is this:
1. Spyware and viruses are #1 cause in slow computers. Even if nothing happens, you can still have them. What you can do is download a free widely acclaimed spyware removal program called Spybot Search & Destroy. Download Spybot S&D from here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index…
Scanning will take about 30 minutes, and once you're done scanning, select "Fix Selected Problems". It will act like it's frozen, but in actuality it's fully deleting Spyware thats on your computer.
2. Remove programs that you never use anymore by going into Control Panel and selecting "Add and Remove Programs". From there, there will be a list that include the programs, software, and games that you currently have on your computer. If you want to remove a program, highlight that program and click Change/Remove. From there, there will be an window that contains the options "Repair" and "Uninstall". Click "Uninstall".
3. Clear your harddrive of temporary files. These files slow down your computer immensely. You can do this by downloading CCleaner: http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Y… After you install this program, start it and press "Run Cleaner". It should take only about 5 minutes or less.
4. Remove Invalid Registry Entries. These also slow down your computer. And guess what! You can remove these by starting CCleaner and on the left side, click "Registry". From there, select "Scan for Issues". It might take a minute. After that, select "Fix selected Issues…".
5. Delete Unnecessary Startup Processes. This is a HUGE culprit on the average PC computer. Ever wonder why your computer is so slow on startup? This is because your computer is loading up programs like iTunes, Quicktime, etc. You can delete these processes with no deletion of the program by using CCleaner. Once you start up CCleaner, select tools on the left hand side and then select "Startup". From here, you can delete startup processes like AIM, RealPlayer, and Quicktime. WARNING: There are no backups to these processes, so if you delete a Windows process, you will either have to reinstall or turn to a professional.
6. After deleting all of those things, you will have a HUGE space in your harddrive. Problem is, it doesn't make much of a difference in speed. To finalize the spaces that you have made, you need to defragment your harddrive. This is a lengthy process, but it works in the end. What you need to do is press Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. From here, you select your main drive and then select "Defragment". If you haven't defragmented in a while, or never have, it will take a LONG time. Maybe 1-5 hours. But it all is worth it at the end.
This will take awhile, but in the end, your computer could get 50% faster.

I don't see anything you did for registry errors a corrupted registry or one with to many errors can also slow your computer down. Download CCleaner it has a good registry cleaner. Also make shure you defrag your hard drive and shut down to many start up programs. Aslo make shure there is no program conflict like have to many Anti Spyware programs or 2 anti Virus programs

do you have other programs running, they are all the icons in the taskbar, right click and close them. Secondly is the more than one computer in your home using a wireless router, lastly disk clean-up > more options tab > delete restore points

The first person answered defrag and that could be right though I think that your disk would have to be just completely fragmented to slow it down.
How many programs do you have running in the background? If you have too many that take to much RAM, this could very easily slow your computer down quite considerably.
Also, how many virus protection programs do you have running? Running more than one at once can cause them to conflict each other and really slow down your computer.
