Why is the only Data Encryption option for my wireless adaptor only WEP?

September 8th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I have a Netgear WG311 and the Network Authentication opitons are either “Open” and “Shared” & Data Encryption options are either “WEP” and “Disabled”. I need to use “WPA” for my router setup but, I don’t have that option on my Netgear adaptor. Why is this the case?

The WG311 is NOT a wireless router. it is a wireless adapter.

You don’t get to pick and choose what encryption system you can use with a wireless adapter.

You need to set the type of encryption on the Wireless router. I recommend using WPA-PSK and a good long key.

You need to download the latest driver for your card. I believe the WG311 cards support wpa after a particular driver version. You should check there site to compare the version you have with what they recommend for wpa.
