why is the scan on my Mcafee so freaken slow?

it takes like forever to get Mcafee to go into scan mode before that the screen freezes like for a hour and it takes a million years before it's finish with the scan. now are any of you experiencing the same thing? now whenever i scan it in safe mode it runs a little faster but in safe mode most of the components of mcafee are disabled.
