why, when windows tries to install a component and it asks for a missing dll, it does not like the one I give?

recently i have been having trouble with my computer - issues with getting on the LAN at work and using Internet explorer which I only ever use when I feel a windows update might resolve something. I noticed that there were some networking components that sounded like they might help and when I tried to add them to the installation, it says there are dlls missing and asks me to locate them. They are right there, I can see them right there in the explorer window but for some reason the installation won't accept them. I have tried to reistall sp3 a few times but to no avail. I have also done many virus scans…
