Why won’t my vista recognize my Sony Handycam camcorder?

I just got a DCR-HC62 Handycam. I wanted to put the videos on the computer and i used a firewire but my computer doesn’t recognize it. I downloaded the software from the cd too but it says Cannot find the Handycam. I have it on play and its plugged into the charger. Anyone know whats wrong???
