Im going to set up a wireless network at my house using a N wireless router, and we already have high-speed cable internet coming in. BUT my desktop is slightly outdated. We only have 512 MB or ram, and only a 2.10 GHZ XP processor. To be perfectly honest, the only thing Im going to be using the wireless internet for is playing my Nintendo DS with my friends online. So when I play online, will it slow down my desktop really bad? Do you think I should upgrade before I install my router?? Any tips on this would be helpfull. Im not too savy on wireless internet.

There are different speeds of wirelss routers. Get the faster speeds.

If you play online and you have someone using the computer, that should not slow down the computers performance at all.

You might want to consider upgrading, depending on what type of usage you are using your computer for, but it should not slow down your desktop PC. I am having similar problems, but yours seems quite okay.

Neither am I (more of a hardware repair guy) but I don’t think it should affect your gameplay because it’s really all passing through the router rather than your PC

Even before I upgraded my old desktop, when I went wireless for my and my sons laptops, it did not slow down the desktop at all.
Get the higher speed router and you should be fine - Go for it!

First thing you have to do is to protect your wireless network. Some one in your area might be able to steal your wireless internet. So secure it.
2nd Yes it will slow it down slightly. But not much. I’d be more worried aboutr someone stealing the wireless internet.

The desktop computer will not be slowed down at all performance wise but the spped of the internet will be affected if someone is using the wireless and the desktop internet at the same time.

You’re getting the data from one source, via your Internet connection and your wireless router. If more than one user is pulling information from the same access point, there’s less bandwidth available to everyone at that point.
When you play online, don’t run other Internet-connected applications at the same time. The less demand that is put on your Internet connection, the faster your DS connection will be. In addition, your desktop is not intended to be as mobile as your DS, so connect your laptop to the router directly via an ethernet cable.
