I have a old acer desktop that came pre-loaded with windows vista home premium, it is now dead. I am now building a custom pc and want to know if I can use the acers home premium cd key with a friends retail copy install disc of home premium to install on my new pc.

Did you have to enter the key when you bought your acer? If not then it is an OEM which is installed on computers and already activated.
As long as you have THAT cd with the vista on it you should be able to but if not, it probably will not work.

If you have the it, try it
It can't do any harm.
It will work or it won't most likely it will work.

It won't work. As far as MS is concerned, Vista is tied to the hardware it was originally installed on. This is especially true for OEM versions. When you try to activate it the server will reject the activation because it was already activated on other hardware.
