I need to buy my daughter a new PC for Christmas. What I’m wondering is if I buy one with Vista will it still network with the other machines in the house ( we have 6 in total) or will there be issues. We need to be able to file share, printer share etc.
Also are there many major software issues/compatibility problems associated with Vista as opposed to XP.
Edit> the network is set up through wired hubs and the 6 machines share a broadband connection through the hubs also.
I think that the main point may be getting missed here -
I am asking about getting 1 PC with Vista and adding it to an existing network of 5 computers all running XP - possible ?
I am NOT about to go out and buy 6 copies of Vista and reinstall everything.

Windows Vista is a lot better with better security and works great with service pack 1. Yes it will network.
I hate XP now. Vista is a lot better.

There are millions who say Vista is not good, excluding me. Vista is superb. It is hard to use XP now. If you have hubs and routers, it will be easy. But to make a Wi-Fi network directly from PC to PC running Vista and XP is hard. But I say, stay with Vista. The new features are cool. Don’t buy a Vista Home Basic.

I bought a new laptop a few weeks ago which has Vista as its operating platform. Whilst I have no general complaints about Vista other than it is taking a while to become familiar with (because many of the commands, icons, etc are changed or in different locations from the last several versions of Windows), I am having huge problems connecting to my small office network which is XP based.
All other computers in the office use XP. I can connect to the internet via the wireless network in the office but I cannot connect to any other shared computers and cannot connect to any printers.
I have spent hours trawling through the contradictory and ambiguous Microsoft “help” pages and the best answer I have managed to find is that I need to download some form of “patch” onto the network server. Apparently, this should allow XP and Vista to “talk” and should thus allow printer connections. I haven’t yet tried the download because the Microsoft “help” pages didn’t really inspire me with confidence that this will actually work.
So my comment is: be warned that all may not be as simple as it seems.
I’d appreciate any further comments on this problem…
