Whenever i try to play a video file in My window Media player 11 on Windows Vista, it comes up acquiring codec in the bottom corner. Then the usual error window pops up saying “windows media player has stopped working, Windows is checking for a solution to the problem.
It does this with all Video formats, DivX etc;

Download and install K-Lite mega codec pack.
Beware it’s not unusual to find these have been infected with a virus so scan after downloading.

Yep or you could just install the DIVX player (google it) this will also install the codec’s needed which windows will also use.

Hi,
Thing to understand is that Windows Media player is designed to play specific Video formats which it considers as being the norm. These formats usually end up requiring a lot of space in order to play large Videos. Video codecs (different type of format) such as DivX allow for a good quality video but the video file does not have to be large. The Issue is that Windows does not really offer support for such codecs and you have to usually download the codecs (which are offered in packs) as third party software and install them at your own risk. One such Codec Pack is K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 4.1.7.

I tried this Codec Pack once but it made my already jumpy Vista even less stable when running Videos. This was my experience and there are probably a few who will tell you other wise. Be wise in your choice of codecs (as a rule of thumb, avoid videos that ask for codecs that are not recognized by WMP)

First and foremost I would recommend switching to Media Player Classic or VideoLAN player (the former being more highly recommended) for videos. They’re simply less annoying, they’re fast, and they’re simple.
If you insist on using WMP, then I suggest making sure that you have the latest updates, have the latest version of ffdshow, uninstall any codec packs you may have (ffdshow should usually do the job for most formats just by itself, but CCCP is probably one of the few safe ones, and any additional ones you need should be downloaded separately).
If none of the above works, then as I said, just stop using WMP. I understand that you keep your music library in WMP which is fair enough, just watch you videos seperately in Media Player Classic or something.
