Ok so, I need to do a film for my English Class for tomorros, I filmed it but I need to edit it but everytime I import a video it says:
The file E:\VIDEO_RM\VIDEO_RM.DAT cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
Details:
-I have a HP pavillion with Vista and the ver. in movie maker is the latest one.
-I didn't have this problem with my other camera.
If you're gonna tell me to do something, please tell me how t! I hate media player!

Try to open the file using another program, such as realplayer or Quicktime Player or Windows Media Player. When you get it opened save it from that location, but change the format.
I hope this works for you. It did for me.

Windows movie maker does not support .DAT files, only video files such as .avi, .mov, .wmv. In order to import your files you will need to convert them. You can try http://www.008soft.com/dat-to-avi.htm to convert them to avi or another similar program to convert your dat files. On your camera, there is most likely a setting that you can change the output video on it to .avi also.
