before when i had 2.1 windows movie maker for xp i could play GIF images and split them without having to put them on the time line/storyboard. now that i have a new computer, i now have vista. but the thing is it wont let me play the GIF format clip which would allow me to split it. when i try splitting it on the time line, it just starts from the beginning on the second clip (and i want it to start from the middle from where i split it) anyone that could help?

I realize this doesn’t answer your question, but it may be an alternative. I was using windows movie maker on Vista and just hated it. I have since purchased Sony’s Vegas software which is about 1,000 times better, and it is very easy to learn.
There are literally hundreds of youtube videos that show you how to do incredible things with the software. I bought mine on sale for just a little more than $50, but it has saved me hundreds of hours of the course of the year (I do a lot of editing).
Try this with movie maker: Take a video of something, and try to slowly zoom in on the video while tilting the camera slowly for a cool effect. You cant do it. But you can with Sony Vegas.
