If you are unable to open your normal Windows but you can open Safe Mode then use the Safe Mode option with command prompt.

Best way to remove this problem is to format ur computer and reinstall windows, that will remove all possible errors from ur system, because while updating your laptop, may be there could be more errors ur computer may be got, so try formatting your computer and reinstall windows.

But if formatting is not possible, then you need to repair your system with SFC command.
      1. Insert Windows Xp cd into ur CD-ROM ( after opening of windows )
      2. Go to run, type cmd or If you open the Safe Mode with command prompt option, your computer will open with command prompt
      3. Now type SFC /SCANNOW, it will take 20 - 40 minutes to complete
      4. After that restart your system
      5. Again run, cmd
      6. Now type SFC /PURGECACHE

Hope you may not get same problem again.
