ok so i am having problems with my parents computer, every time i turn it on i get the error message. "<windows root>\system32\hal.dll"
i have the cd, boot it and click r for repair,
however when i get to the next screen i have 2 options for what windows installation i would like to log onto, i have H:\MiniNT and i have H:\I386
i select either and i type in bootcfg /rebuild… it sais scanning all disks for windows installations, please wait since this may take a while so i wait… and wait hahaah
then when it finally scans the disk, it says
Error: failed to succcessfully (yes it actually had three c's in successfully) scan disks fow windows installations, this error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which would preven bootcfg from successfully scanning. use chkdsk to detect any disk errors, and so it doesn't work…
i have also tried without the cd going to f8, when i do this i select last good configuration however it attempts to start and has the same error message, does anyone know what to do about this, how i can fix my computer… please?

Reinstall windows. Before that, just back up all your softwares in each of the local disk. Use NTFS format. One of the most important registry has been deleted in your system 32 files.

If you've tried these options and nothing has worked, the chances are that the hard drive is failing and won't allow you to fix it. You may want to try running a program called HDD Regenerator on it to see if it's just some bad sectors. If booting to that disc and running it doesn't fix it, then the drive is really shot.
