My brand new HP Pavillion dv9000 is locking up completely about 60 seconds after logging in to windows.
I’ve tried several system restores.
I strongly believe it is not the workings of a virus.
Windows loads perfectly fine in safe mode, no problems for 10 minutes or more. (and with networking support)
This is an x64 bit system.
A friend informs me that it might be a board problem, a short possibly.
I was wondering if that is possible if the system runs fine in safe mode, but not normally…
Any thoughts?
I've also been using this computer for well over 6 months now.
Interesting how i fixed it…
If you want your computer to not boot at all, start cmd in admin mode, then type "bcdedit -debug on"
Computer is trash until you turn it back off with the same command.
Lovely work!
Interesting how a microsoft post told me to do this to fix something with your sound. Thanks microsoft yet again!

Did you register it?
Should have come w/ 60 days of norton anti-virus
Can you take it back?
Did you download software?

Wouldn’t have thought so… Safe Mode is about the Operating System, not hardware… unless running in Safe Mode wasn’t pushing it beyond it’s limits in temperature or something similar. If it was the first time turned on in the morning and not a hot day, I wouldn’t expect it to shut down for overheating this quickly.
I’d still be inclined to think virus. There was one a few years ago that shut down XP and 2000 machines within about 1 minute of booting - in Safe Mode it was no problem and you could get rid of it easily. The annoyance was that so many people had to go and use other computers to get the program to get rid of the virus because many people found they couldn’t connect to the internet via dial-up modems.
This is a thorough guide to cleaning nasty software off your computer - give that a go and see what results you get; often after following the procedures in here, people’s computers are completely clean:

You can get monitoring software to see if you can pin down any temperature problems:

Otherwise, maybe it’s a driver issue?? Has it completely loaded before this happens or is it still loading?

sounds like a driver related issue. Look for problems with stuff that loads in regular bootup but not in safe mode (like drivers or startup software)
