I have just bought a new pc for my mum to build and i was thinking of putting her old hard drive into the new pc cos it is 80gb and fits ok. I just wanted to know because it won't just work putting it into another pc, if i put an xp disk in you can tell it to repair the computer, and thereby it will install the drivers for the different pc, but will it keep everything that was on the hard drive and not put it into windows old because its not a new instalation just a repairing of the old one???

While that would work.I would suggest that you back up the data on the old drive. then format the drive and install a fresh install of XP(there is a lot of built up garbage in the registry) then put back the data. this will solve a LOT of future headaches

The option for install will ask to leave current files and settings intact, click yes. You will need to update all drivers for the new pc. Why not just get a new hard drive and install the os on it, and slave the old drive ?

this might work depending on how much different the new hardware is. it is worth a try. In the long run i would suggest a clean install.
off the subject but in my profile is a link to my webpage

I would back all the files up onto a memory stick or Cd. Then i would do the rescue thing. I have never attempted it before…but i think as long as you back up everything onto something you'll be fine

If the old hard drive has xp installed, then you can use it to "repair" the computer.
Otherwise it won't work unless you select UPGRADE.
You can also use this OLD hard drive as slave to the one in the new pc. Just connect it to the ribbong cable & ensure the jumper is in the CS or Slave position.
