Windows XP automatic update error?

Here how it goes, whenever I restarted my PC Windows Automatic Update always somehow gets ’screwy’ and always says I turned it off when in fact I just can’t turn it back on and it simply refuse to run the update and I can’t even access the Windows site with IE7 saying saying error. I already tried to fix the problem by reinstalling the Windows Automatic Update feature via the Windows directory and it works until I restart my PC and the Automatic Update will get all screwy again saying I turned it off and all. I already visited the Microsoft Windows technical support site and it doesn’t helps. Also I’m not really keen on reinstalling my whole Windows OS again.
