I just Repaired my Windows XP through my original Windows disk. Now, Windows doesn't even load. It just goes to a message saying:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>:\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file."
I can't enter safe mode, or enter my last good configuration. I tried bootcfg /rebuild in the Microsoft Recovery Console but it didn't work. I did the CHKDSK /r command in the recovery console but that didn't work either. I also did the expand x:\i386\hal.dl_ command in recovery console. This didn't work either. What can I do to get Windows running properly again? Thanks.

You might have to re-install Windows XP by doing a clean install. You'll lose all your data though…but it seems to be the only way out in this situation.
