I use the WEP method for exactly that reason, strangely enough. It "can" be hacked, but it's rather difficult and plays on other vulnerabilities. If you use the maximum hex keys possible with your router, it's pretty safe; I don't see anybody coming to your network and trying to hack it when there's plenty of other unsecured networks around.

If you don't set one, though, you are at much more risk than you seem aware. People who have access to your internet eat away your bandwidth, for one reason. However, the most dangerous possibility is some freak that parks in front of your house and uses his laptop to view illegal content though your connection, such as child pornography or to download illegal music/movies. So guess who's house the FBI comes knocking at?

Edit: Thanks to the guy below for essentially copying exactly what I just said. Now the asker can read it twice!

If you leave your wireless open, anyone can leach on your connection and go anywhere on the internet. Meaning: they could do anything from throttling your speed down to boost theirs to surfing child porn sites to attempting hacks into government systems. At any rate, you are responsible for what is done with your connection. So yeah, it’s not just people using your internet for free, it’s residual effects of them using it that can really hurt.
Of course people know how to hack encryption keys. Every security system has a flaw that some hacker or even casual computer user may find a way to exploit. Your risk is greatly reduced though by setting up security as most people won’t bother to try and crack yours… unless you really tick them off.

U know if people use your internet for free that anything they download or view will come back to u. and they can easily hack into your system and get your information i suggest you do put a password on it and make sure that no one else can use the internet off of it. fyi to the person above its not rocket since so yea hes going to repeat some of the things you say its common sense to have it blocked . so i guess hes going to read it a bunch of times excuse us for copying what u say its the truth what do u want us to do lie to him
