I have a bt voyager 205 broadband router, and a netgear wp802 wifi box (sorry about the lack of technical words, i just don't know them - however i know that the netgear is not a router). My problem is that i have lost my instruction manual, and when i look on the internet for how to set up security on the wifi, it just talks about the instruction manual. Can anyone who knows how to set up security (and encryption i suppose, but they may be one and the same, i don't really know) on this netgear please talk me through the steps.
Please be very specific, as - as you have probably guessed - i am really a novice when it comes to computers.
Thanks.
Thanks for the answer dan, but the netgear defintly isn't a router. I have checked the netgear website and it agrees with this. I'm not sure what it calls it, but i think it does something called bridging, or something like that. It is just sending and receiving wireless signals - it cannot be plugged into wall socket.
if i go to 192.168.1.1 (which is the default gateway) it takes me to the voyager page.

I'm not too familiar with it,however, I am with routers in general.
First, you need to get your router IP address (netgear is the router). To do this, go to Start, Run, and type
cmd
Then a windows shell (black window) should open up. There type
ipconfig
Some information should appear, but you should look for
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Copy the numbers next to it (they might be something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0 etc, the last 2 numbers might differ)
Go to your web browser, and type in that IP address, exactly like it is, you can add http:// if you wish
example: http://192.168.1.1
After this, it should ask for a user name and password, if you havent set these, they are most likely the default
Default User/Password are
user: admin
password: admin
OR
user: admin
password: setup
Then it should let you within a menu, where you have several options… look for the Wireless Security, or Wireless Encryption. As i'm not familiar with the router, I can't really know where to go from there, but if you do set it up, make sure you use WPA or WPA2 encryption, NOT WEP
