There are much better free alternatives like Ubuntu and Opensuse. http://www.ubuntu.com or http://www.opensuse.org
Have you ever even tried using Linux? It's very simple now. I'm pretty sure anyone could use it.
If it's so easy to secure windows from viruses, why do so many people still get them?
Linux isn't 100% virus proof, but there has never been a known virus that was able to propogate in a linux environment.
I didn't have to install 1 driver when I installed Linux. On the other hand, when I install windows XP, I have to go through the hassle of installing sound, video, network (try downloading a network card driver from the internet without an internet connection), etc.
They myths of linux usage are getting very old. People just keep saying the same BS over and over, when they've never even tried it for themsels.
I always find Linux forums very helpful, no matter how new I am to the thing i'm trying to accomplish.
Look at the hundreds and hundreds of messages on here saying they have a virus. Are you calling all these people ignorant?

Because windows is easier for the casual user to use and you don't have to be a geek to run it. Plus windows isn't all that hard to protect from viruses or spyware.
To respond to your second question no i haven't tried Linux but i have looked into it and decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Plus i don't know how people keep getting viruses i haven't had 1 in over 2 years i guess they are ignorant.

Because people don't want to spend half their waking life, finding drivers that will work in Linux.
Most Windows users NEVER get a serious infection using Windows…only the ignorant computer illiterate types do and that is not exactly the type of user that Linux "markets" toward, anyway. Linux forums always have a condescending attitude against these types.
EDIT:
Yeah, most of the people on Yahoo Answers are pretty ignorant users…the schools shove a computer in their face at a young age and never bother to teach the kid how to operate it correctly.
Then when the kid gets to be about 10, mommy and daddy buy the kid a Windows computer and let him (her) run it as admin. Ouch.
Half of these people couldn't find a picture on their computer, if their was not a "My Pictures" icon to click! How do you expect them to learn a Linux file-system?
And oh yeah, just for the record, I do keep a couple of Linux live distros on hand….just in case….the ability get back up and running and back on line with Linux DID bail me out once.
Yahoo is gonna bust us for "chatting"….. so good nite.

Maybe it's because Windows XP is the most popular OS.

I use Windows XP. My computer guy recommends I use Firefox rather than IE but I am familiar with XP and find it works really well. I keep my anti-virus up-to-date (check it manually) and run ccleaner every day and run Widows Update every week - just in case the automatic update hasn't worked (sometimes it doesn't).
My sister just bought a Vista computer and said she can't use Firefox on it for some reason. She has used programs such as Opera in the past.
I am not a technie - don't have the interest or the knowledge. I just want to play solitaire, read email (including newsletters) and send it, answer questions here, look up stuff, order online, etc. The computer is my mailbox, atlas, dictionary, encyclopedia, newspaper, magazine, and catalog. Sometimes it is my telephone. It could be my library if I wish.
That is why I don't use another program.
