"XP antivirus" virus problem! Please help a guy out!?

June 23rd, 2008 · 7 Comments

OK, I've recently had some problems with my PC, mainly not being able to access some sites like Photobucket, Yahoo!, Facebook, etc. But, they seem to be fixed now without me doing anything.

NOW a popup came up telling me that "XP antivirus" wants to scan my PC. I knew it was a load of bull so I googled it and saw its actually a virus/fraudware. I have Norton AntiVirus so I went to the Norton website and it gave me these steps to remove the virus (please open so you see what I'm talking about):
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-101010-0713-99&tabid=3

Here's the thing… I updated my "virus definitions" and then I did a Full System Scan with 0 problems… then I searched for "xp antivirus" like the instructions tell me to… I went to the places on my PC the instructions say to go to BUT I can't find any files that the instructions said I would find & must delete.

The popup must have come from somewhere! What must I do?
Step 4 (in the linked instructions) says to go to those places on my PC and delete the XP antivirus files I find there BUT those files and places don't seem to exist!

If I can't find them does this mean that the virus is gone?
I found these solutions: http://www.lancelhoff.com/2008/02/22/how-to-remove-xp-antivirus-protection/\

But it says to delete some .dll files … I see these files are in the System32 folder. Won't deleting anything from System32 seriously screw up my PC?

When the files aren't found anymore the virus is removed in success
So guess Norton already removed it when you made youre first scan

The pop up could have been caused by a pop-up on the Internet, as long as you didn't click on it, you should be fine.

Also, in regards to not being able to access some sites, you may have a problem with your router and how big the packets are. You should consult your ISP to make sure all your settings are correct.

The malware you got was an Adware. Adware point you to advertisement/popup banner websites and often to website containing virus, Earlier versions of Norton Antivirus cannot remove adware. So try install adware remover.Something like yahoo adware remover is a good option. Also as far as your sytem files are concerned, windows provide an option to retreive the system files from Windows XP CD . Procedure is as given below:
Goto start–>Run–>cmd. This will open ur command prompt. Now type cd… and then C:\Windows\system32\sfc /scannow in the command line. Now if the system files are corrupted, the computer will ask you for ur operating system CD.Insert it and when the process is complete restarted ur computer.
