The other day I noticed by computer was making a whirring/whining noise in a cyclical frequency from high to low pitch. At the same time the computer was very slow, especially on the internet. I tried to shut down Windows and it locked up so I turned the computer off. When I turned it back on I received a message “we are sorry for the inconvenience but Windows did not load properly”. It offers me several different ways to try “Safe Mode”, “last know conifiguration”, etc. I’ve tried them all and Windows won’t load. I’ve also placed by XP CD in the drive and it won’t boot from that either. I opened the case and found the heat sink fan on the cpu loose due to a broken bracket. Thinking the cpu was fried I replaced it…no change. I do get the Intel and Windows icons as it tries to load but then the error message. Can anyone help???

I had a similar problem recently, when i called a PC repairman he found that my hard drive was dead/dying.

Sounds more like your HDD is on it’s way out than your CPU.

its more than likely your HDD (hard drive) possibly worth trying reinstalling windows. I.e completely reformat you HDD. hopefully you will have a backup of everything. if not there are ways around it but its a bit tricky.
let me know if you need any more help

I agree it could be a hard drive. However, another thing it could be is bad memory. If you have more than one memory DIMM in your motherboard try taking all but one out and see if it will boot. Go through and test each DIMM and see if it makes a difference. If not then I would say it is your hard drive. If it is your hard drive then I would get another hard drive install a clean installation of windows on your new hard drive then put your old one in as a slave, and then try to get all your files you need off the drive before it dies completely.

First unplug the tower and then take out the battery from the main board, leave it out for 5 mins. PUT IT BACK IN then restart your comp, see if that helps..
if not, Change the boot sequence to CD Drive, with your XP CD in the tray. then repair windows installation.
If changing boot sequence does not work, back up your HD and go into the BIOS and disable the HD and format the drive and reinstall windows.
Good luck!

Try going into the bio’s making your cd drive boot first then doing a repair install of XP.
